Our history
For 100 years Royde and Tucker has been supplying and manufacturing architectural hardware including our revolutionary HI-LOAD architectural hinges.
In 1924 in Stoke Newington, North London, Mr George Alfred Murgitroyd and Mr Richard Assheton Tucker formed the business, predominately selling traditional ironmongery wares to local retail and trade customers alike.
Within a few years the business had developed to include repairing and then manufacturing specialist items of hardware, in a separate building on Stoke Newington Road, to meet increasing design requirements of the early 1930s.
The war years saw a significant change for the business with the manufacturing capability being harnessed for the war effort with presses and tooling being used in the production of various armaments.
1950 – 1960
Post war the company returned back to its architectural hardware manufacturing origins and throughout the 50s and 60s the company continued to grow its manufacturing capabilities.
1970
With the advent of the recession on the early 1970s however, along with the original founders having moved on, the business found itself struggling for direction until two new prospective owners Mr Steve Jenkins and Mr Nicholas Gadsby took up the reins in 1974.
1980 – Today
In the mid 1980s the decision was made to move the company to larger more manufacturing friendly premises in The High Cross Centre, Tottenham, these premises were subsequently re developed and expanded to support the increasingly volumetric nature of production, especially to support the growing success of HI LOAD hinges, door pivots, stainless steel letterplates as well as traditional sash window fittings.
Today the company is still manufacturing products to meet the increasingly demanding design, high performance and reliability led requirements of the modern built environment.
We are still just a few miles from where it all began; moving out of Tottenham in 2005 to a new purpose-built facility in Hitchin, encompassing all of our manufacturing and warehousing operations.
The new facility includes a dedicated press shop for both our high-speed presses and combination laser punch, electro plating and powder coating, as well as component and assembly operations for Portman Pocket doors.
Today Royde and Tucker Architectural Hardware and its sister products Portman Pocket Doors and Cadwell Green Doors design, manufacture and provide door solutions to building owners, architects, consultants, contractors and homeowners in the UK and throughout the world.
